Mp4 browser support

HTML 5 video is the here and now of online video and is the default of how video is delivered via the web, but is currently not supported on older browsers in, particular version Internet Explorer 8 and earlier, you still have to provide an alternative format for those older browsers and undoubtedly that will be Flash as a fall back method other alternatives are QuickTime and Silverlight, but Flash is more widespread and easily deployed solution.

Video also needs to scale to support a myriad of devices, so responsive techniques are now required to allow you to serve 1 video file to a number of devices.

Each video player discussed here has links to specific pages for that player and how to set it up and also tweak them to use for responsive design and layout. One of the easiest and free methods to deliver HTML5 video with flash fallback is to host the video on free services like YouTube and Vimeoall you really need to care about is inserting the embed code onto your page and you are good to go.

Here is a couple of guides of getting both Vimeo and YouTube videos set up and also responsively scaling them in all browsers and iOS devices. Sometimes though you may need to deliver videos outside of these services and there are a number of solutions, time first though to delve into some of the format issues…. MP4 would be the ideal format for everything as this is also used for the fallback Flash video, it is high quality and out there in abundance, but not on Firefox and Opera as it has licensing payment issues which those browser vendors would rather use a license free format.

Chrome also initially declared it would drop support for mp4 with the H. So MP4 almost covers the gamut apart from Firefox and Opera. Looking at those stats I would be very tempted to just lose OGG and just stick with WebM and live with fact that occasionally a few users are going to get a blank rectangle on their browser with which that figure will further diminish over time.

The attributes inside the tag include the width and height of the video, controls, preload, poster the initial static image on load and the source URLs for the 3 or 2 if you drop OGG video formats. There are many Flash code generators — Adobe provides a free and easy to use Flash Player fall back. Further info on Firefox and mime video format errors. To encode to either use the very cool Miro Video Converter. The javascript and css files are stored on a remote server you can download and host yourself links needed to be put in the head of your html document are:.

Its just been upgraded to version 4 and I personally think is the best tool. You can just include a MP4 only and non-mp4 browsers are served Flash video. This solution is now part of the core code in WordPress. This is also now the case in VideoJS. The script is best kicked off with jquery either use in the body or include in your custom js script.

Example mediaelement set up and responsive technique here. In the head of your document add these scripts. The first script uses a free player but has a JW logo, if you want to go pro you need to buy a license and add the key in the second script.

Add in the javascript for the video as below. Sublime will host your videos optionalfree and at a cost, the free service is http only not https.

HTML5 audio

The free player has a Sublime logo branded in the video player for a couple of secs. There is a code generator on the site which is easy to use and you are given Javascript to include in your page header as well as the video code for the body of your page. The whole thing works very smoothly, you just need an MP4 source file which is delivered in HTML 5 Video with a Flash fall back served for older browsers and non-compliant MP4 browsers.

What Is good about this creator code is that you only need to pass in an mp4, so in Firefox, Chrome and Opera the video is delivered via Flash, so you only have to work with 1 format. Wistia is another slick solution, sign up for free and get 3 videos hosted and 5GB of bandwith, after that there is a pricing scale, you upload your videos to the site and get an iframe code in return.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service.

Tried the same file in Firefox 5. If it's still not working here's what may certainly be a solution: encode the mp4 with compression format H. If you encode it with format mpeg4 or divx or else it will not work on IE9 and may as well crash Google Chrome. To do that, I use Any Video Converter freeware.

But it could be done with any good video tool out there. I've been trying all solutions listed here and tried other workaround for days but the problem lied in the way I created my mp4. IE9 does not decode other format than H. Dan has one of the best answers up there and I'd suggest you use html5test. As stated above, no single format works and what I use is MP4 encoded to H. This let's me show video on the following:.

Note: The. This prevents the MP4 from starting to play right away when the page loads on IE8, it will start to play once the play button is pushed. But it also required that the file can start to play as soon as it starts downloading. I spent many hours to figure that out, so I hope that it can help someone else.

You don't need anything fancy, just let avconv do the job for you:. To add support for IE9, you have to move the file info to the file header, so the browser can start playing it as soon as it starts to download it. It is part of libav-tools package.

Mozilla Firefox 3. Firefox 4 also supports WebM. Opera Google Chrome 3. Google Chrome 6.In this guide, we'll look at the container formats used most commonly on the web, covering basics about their specifications as well as their benefits, limitations, and ideal use cases. WebRTC does not use a container at all. Instead, it streams the encoded audio and video tracks directly from one peer to another using MediaStreamTrack objects to represent each track.

While there are a vast number of media container formats, the ones listed below are the ones you are most likely to encounter. Some support only audio while others support both audio and video. The MIME types and extensions for each are listed. Not all of these are broadly supported by browsers, however; some combinations of container and codec are sometimes given their own file extensions and MIME types as a matter of convenience, or because of their ubiquity.

For example, an Ogg file with only an Opus audio track is sometimes referred to as an Opus file, and might even have the extension.

But it's still actually just an Ogg file. In other cases, a particular codec, stored in a certain container type, is so ubiquitous that the pairing is treated in a unique fashion. To learn more about a specific container format, find it in this list and click through to the details, which include information about what the container is typically useful for, what codecs it supports, and which browsers support it, among other specifics. Support is also implied only for the container itself, not for any specific codecs.

The format was designed for use on 3G mobile phones, but can still be used on more modern phones and networks. However, the improved bandwidth availability and increased data caps on most networks has reduced the need for the 3GP format. However, this format is still used for slower networks and for lower-performance phones. The format is not encumbered by any patents, so its use is safe from interference. There are two versions of the format, defined in parts 1 and 14 of the specification.

MP4 is a popular container today, as it supports several of the most-used codecs and is broadly supported. The original MPEG-4 Part 1 file format was introduced in ; the version 2 format, defined in Part 14, was added in The Ogg container format is a free and open format maintained by the Xiph.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service.

Mp4 format is not supported by all browsers when using video tag of html5. I googled for the problem and came up with conclusion that i have to convert video into other formats like.

My question is if i convert one video into three others formats it will occupy more space on the server and i will have huge data on my website and isn't it ridiculous solution to convert one video into three other formats.

What is the solution for this problem. Try to reduce video frames bit rate, otherwise we can't. As per our clients requirement, we need the video to play in all browsers, so we've need to convert to all formats. Otherwise compatibility not perfect. I've worked with HTML5 videos and audios files in many projects. Whether it is so important for compatibility. Learn more.
